♻️That’s right! You can recycle your EMPTY hairspray cans, spray paint, shaving cream cans, household cleaners, air fresheners and more!

Small aluminum cans like these aren’t pressurized enough to explode or hurt anyone in our facility, so go ahead and empty those cans, then recycle them!

Our hopeful New Year’s message from George O’Keefe, Economic Development Director, and Darby Beliveau

Our hopeful New Year’s message from George O’Keefe, Economic Development Director, and Darby Beliveau, President of Friends of the River Valley:

2022 has been a year of significant change in the River Valley. We want to share some of the positive developments, particularly in areas where we currently focus on the resources of the Friends.

The US Census Bureau indicated that Rumford gained additional population over and above their 2020 decennial census counts in 2021. While the 2021 figures for the whole River Valley are unpublished, we are confident that most Towns are now experiencing consistent growth for the first time in many decades.

The schools are showing significant increases in reading and math testing scores. Given the lingering learning deficits resulting from the pandemic, this is especially heartening news. School truancy in RSU #10 is down. Credit is due at least in part to the Town of Rumford for applying for a School Resource Officer grant which is helping to reduce truancy along with continued efforts by the RSU to address the problem.

The River Valley towns continue to see meaningful increases in taxable value. Rumford added $1.9 million in the new tax base from home improvements alone. There are concerted efforts in Rumford and Mexico by new real estate investors to improve and turn around blighted properties. They are having substantial success bringing new residents to Town, many of whom are leaving the high-rent markets in Portland and looking for a higher quality of place and lower cost of living.

The opening of the Rumford Falls Best Western Plus has been an enormous success; It proves that the River Valley has extraordinary demand for previously severely underserved lodging. Black Mountain of Maine continues its efforts to expand snow-making and to fulfill its long-term capital plan.

The Friends continue to support and help their partner, the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition, operate the Old School Food Pantry and look forward to seeing our efforts in support of a childcare center opening in Rumford in 2023. More to come in the New Year.

2 – Falls (439)
3 – Breathing Problem (261)
